Topic 2 Environment and pollution

Air pollution: car fume, smoke from factories, dust particles, sandstorm, acid rain, high population density

Water pollution: dumping of untreated waste water into rivers, lakes, reservoirs, land pollution deteriorates underground water

The usual ways of disposing of waste:

 Dumping: in open space, major environmental threat

Landfill: bury wastes without sorting them out, some wastes are are nonbiodegradable, takes too much space, pollute the underground water.

Burning: burn wastes, generate heat, air pollution (side-effect)

Recycling: sort wastes, recycle useful bits, best way to dispose of wastes

What the government can do:

Launch regular educational campaigns to raise people’s awareness of environment protection, strenghen law enforcement to punish those who violate environmental rules and regulations.

What can be done to protect endangered animals:

Strictly enforce laws, create more reserves, set up more wildlife park, do biological research to find better ways to keep and reproduce them.

On Pollution

Pollution has become a serious problem about which we worry. Wherever we go we find pollution, and this is threatening the survival of the human race.

The real ptoblem with pollution is people. It is people who dump millions of tons of wastes into rivers, lakes and the sea. It is also people who disturb the biological balance of nature. Ironically, it is people themselves who must breathe, eat and drink their own pollutants. Some people are of the opinion that pollution is the price we have to pay for the economic development.

It is probably no exaggeration to say that the worsening of the environment threatens the existence of mankind itself. We must do somethong to solve our problem. First of all, we must let everyone see the importance of keeping our enviroment cleam. Then we make more strict laws and regulations to protect our surroundings from being spoiled.

The earth is being harmed by human activity

The quality of human life has improved significantly over the past few centuries, but the Earth is being damaged by human activity. As we develop technology, we demand more from our planet.

Our planet gives everything we need, but natural resources are not inexhaustable. Deforestation removes old trees that can’t be replaced Overfishing may harm fish population to the point where they can't recover. We are too careless in taking what we want without giving anything back.

Anyone living in or near a city has experienced urban sprawl. There is a new shopping area on every corner and new houses and apartments everywhere. Traffic gets worse and worse because planners can’t keep up with growth. Keeping up with human demand is hard enough. Envrionmental concerns come in last.

With growth comes pollutin. Companies and communities dump waste into water. Landfills are full of trash. Emissions from factories pollute the air.

People need to respect the Earth and try to preserve it. If we don’t, what kind of future will we have?
